The basics of crypto
What is crypto?
Cryptocurrency, or crypto, is a digital currency that uses advanced technology to enable transactions without relying on traditional financial intermediaries like banks. Every transaction is recorded on a shared, decentralised ledger called a ‘blockchain’.
Instead of transactions being in a single, private database managed by one bank (which acts as the single point of truth), they’re instantly recorded, verified, and distributed across thousands of computers on a network.
This process, secured by complex cryptography, creates a history of transactions that are transparent and can’t be changed, removing the need for a central authority to enforce trust.

Key terms explained
Here are the most important terms to know when you're getting started with crypto:
- Token: a type of cryptocurrency or digital asset that exists on a blockchain, like Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH)
- Stablecoin: a type of token designed to maintain a stable value, often by being pegged to a fiat currency like the US dollar. This can help manage the risk of price volatility
- Crypto wallet: a digital account where cryptocurrencies are stored. With Revolut Business, you can buy, sell, and hold crypto directly in the app, keeping things simple

Understanding the risks
It’s essential to be aware of the risks before you buy or sell crypto.Volatility: the value of cryptocurrencies can go down as well as up, sometimes very quickly. Past performance is not an indicator of future results. You should be prepared for the value of your holdings to change.

Why should my business use crypto?
Is crypto right for my business?
If your business falls into one of these categories, our crypto services may be for you:
